The capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia is Richmond. It is the third largest city in the state of Virginia. Situated in the Piedmont Region of Virginia, Richmond is settled on the fall line of the James River. The climate is humid subtropical with mild changes between seasons.
Richmond is an independent city with no particular county. On the other hand, the neighborhoods in Greater Richmond extend out to other counties. Downtown Richmond is on the west side near the neighborhoods Shockoe Bottom and Jackson Ward. The area is historically significant and rich in African American history. The area between the river and Belvidere Street is home to the Virginia Commonwealth University. The Fan is an affluent neighborhood renowned for its Victorian architecture. West End is also another upscale neighborhood, home to the Country Club of Virginia. Southside neighborhoods are socio-economically diverse whose residents range from affluent to the impoverished.
Tourists flock to Richmond’s artsy culture and historic monuments. The Museum District is full of the city’s art centers ranging from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts to the Science Museum of Virginia. Among the performing arts, Richmond has its own ballet company and symphony. Residents of Richmond also enjoy the various parks and gardens such as the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden.
