Austin is the capital of Texas and is located in the central region near the Colorado River. Within the city limits are three manmade lakes named Lady Bird Lake, Lake Austin, and Lake Walter E. Long. The population of Austin was estimated to be 743,074 in 2007. Overlooking Lake Austin is the popular destination of Mount Bonnell. The climate is considered humid subtropical because of its hot summers and mild winters. The “Austinites”, as they’re called, are an interesting combination of politicians, musicians, high-tech workers, students, professors, and blue and white collar workers.
Austin’s economy strives from the high-tech companies employing the computer and engineering graduates from the University of Texas at Austin. Other universities in the city include Austin Community College, Concordia University and Acton School of Business.
Austin’s official title is “The Live Music Capital of the World” because of the city’s exciting live music scene. The various nightclubs and music and film festivals add to the entertainment in the city. South Austin Museum of Popular Culture is an art museum famous for showcasing the eccentricities of the Austinites. Other cultural centers include the O'Henry House Museum and Ballet Austin. The city has been used for the filming of several movies including Miss Congeniality, Waking Life, and Man of the House.
