Philadelphia is Pennsylvania's largest city, and the nation's 6th most populous city. According to the Nielsen Media Research, Philadelphia is the 5th largest metro area, 4th largest urban area, and 4th largest consumer media market in the nation. Philadelphia is widely known as 'The City of Brotherly Love', and is known as a strong candidate global city. It has an estimated population of 1,449,634 as of 2007.
In the past, Philadelphia was once the second-largest commercial, education, and cultural center in the British Empire. It even eclipsed New York City during the 18th century in political and social importance. It was here, in Philadelphia, that some of the ideas and actions needed for the American Revolution were born, and it also served as the second capital of the young United States in 1774.
There are various diverse neighborhoods in Philadelphia. The areas that surround the Center City area were considered part of the city, until consolidation took place in 1854. Many smaller neighborhoods also make up the city, including areas based on ethnicity, culture, religion and commercial reasons. The architecture of the city dates back to colonial times, and buildings common of that era can still be seen today in the majority of Philadelphia.
There are many famous historical places in the city. Independence Hall; the Liberty Bell the homes of Edgar Allen Poe and Betsy Ross; the first and second banks of the United States are all part of Independence National Historical Park. There are also many museums, theaters, and venues of all types that call Philadelphia home. The city has had a prominent role in music, especially during the 1970s when Philadelphia soul started and influenced the next generations of musicians and artists.
