In 2007, the city had a population of 747,755 people, and the metropolitan area had a population of 1,754,337 people. The city has a total area of 212.6 square miles but is still expanding through annexations and extensions.
Columbus’ economy is ranked as one of the top 10 best economies in the country. Since it serves as the state’s capital, most residents of Columbus are employed in the government. These include five insurance companies, several banks, and three fast food chains: Steak Escape, White Castle, and Charley’s Grilled Subs.The city of Columbus has a good educational system. It is the home of two public colleges and several private universities. The largest school district in Ohio, Columbus City Schools (CCS) manages 62,000 pupils and 142 elementary, middle and high schools.For recreation, residents can visit several city landmarks and attend different types of festivals. The Columbus Museum of Art, the Wexner Center for the Arts, and Ohio Historical Society have different types of educational exhibits throughout the year. The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium showcases several exotic animals including Siberian tigers, kangaroos, and lowland gorillas. Every year, ComFest, a three-day music festival, hosts a number of live musicians on multiple stages. Around the Fourth of July, the largest fireworks display in the Midwest, the Red, White, and Boom, takes place.
