Jersey City is located in Hudson County, New Jersey and is the second largest city behind Newark.
The demographics for Jersey City are; 34.01% Caucasian; 28.32% African American; 0.45% Native American; 16.20% Asian; 15.11% Mixed.
The city rests on the West Bank of the Hudson River directly across from Lower Manhattan. It is a major commercial and industrial center, major sea port and manufacturing center. Jersey City boasts 11 miles of waterfront and a major rail connection making it a major terminal for transportation and distribution. Some of the major industries in the city are oil refineries, warehousing, chemicals, electronics, textiles and cosmetics.
Jersey City is divided into six counties, these are; Greenville; West Side; Journal Square; The Heights; Downtown and Lafayette. These counties are made up of smaller neighborhoods. Some call Jersey City a city of neighborhoods, each bearing a different aesthetic and architectural style. Newport is located in the Downtown area and consists of residential towers, hotels and office buildings. Journal Square, the commercial heart of Jersey City is in the process of rehabilitation. West Side runs from Broadway to the Bayonne City line and is ethnically diverse. Greenville surrounds Danforth Avenue and is mostly residential. The Heights sits atop the New Jersey Palisades and overlooks Hoboken. Lafayette, also known as Bergen City is between Greenville and Journal Square.
The Liberty Science Center, an interactive science museum is the only major cultural location in the city, but with its close relationship with New York City, they share some of the same cultural diversity that Manhattan does.
