Kansas City is also known as “The City of Fountains” and is located in parts of Jackson, Clay, Cass and Platte Counties, taking up 318 square miles of Missouri. The city climate is humid continental with extremes of hot and cold. In the summer months temperatures run from 72-90 degrees while in the winter they are from 21 to 38 degrees.
The city has a population of about 447,306 in a 318 square mile area. The demographics for Kansas City are; 54.68% Caucasian; 31.23% African American; 0.48% Native American; 1.85% Asian; 3.21% Mixed.
The city has four Fortune 500 companies calling the area home, those are; Sprint Nextel Corporation, H&R Block, Embarq Corporation and YRC Worldwide. AMC Theater and DST systems also call Kansas City home, they are just a few of the Fortune 1000 companies also headquartered there. The Kansas City board of trade is the principal trader for hard, red, winter wheat which is the main ingredient for bread.
Downtown Kansas City takes up an area of 2.9 square miles and resides alongside the Missouri River. The area is divided into 150 neighborhoods. Downtown has it’s own variety of communities with Westport, the Crossroads Art District, 18th and Vine District, Pendleton Heights, Quality Hill, the West Bottoms and River Market being a few notable areas.
Kansas City has more than 200 fountains located within city limits with only Rome, Italy having more. The city boasts diversity in performing arts with the Kansas City Repertory Theatre; the symphony with the Kansas City Symphony; the opera with Lyric opera of Kansas City and Ballet with the Kansas City Ballet. The city is also home to the Kansas City Chiefs NFL team and Kansas City Royals Baseball team.
