Grand Rapids, located in the state of Michigan, is the second largest city in the state. According to a 2007 census, the city had a population of 193,627, and the metro area had approximately 1,323,095 people. Grand Rapids consists of 44.6 square miles of land.The city’s economy is based mostly in the furniture and automobile manufacturing industries. Three major furniture manufacturers, Herman Miller, American Seating, and Steelcase, are based in Grand Rapids. Aside from manufacturing, the city has experienced growth with companies in the health sciences sector. In 2008, millions of dollars will be spent on building and improving hospitals and other types of health facilities.Several colleges and universities, including Aquinas College, Calvin College, Grand Rapids Community College, and Grand Valley State University can be found in Grand Rapids. The K-12 public education system is managed by Grand Rapids Public Schools. The oldest co-educational Catholic high school in the country, Catholic Central High School, is also located here.For entertainment and recreation, residents and tourists can visit different museums. These include the Van Andel Museum Center, one of the oldest history museums in the United States, the Voight House Victorian Museum, and the City Archives and Records Center. In the past, this museum has exhibited the Dead Sea Scrolls.
