Honolulu is also called the “crossroads of the Pacific,” but it is most popular for being the capital of Hawaii.
The city is the most populated area of Hawaii with the area known as the City and County of Honolulu taking up the entire island of Oahu. The population is estimated at 909,863 and the city has a tropical climate with average temperatures in the winter of 53-88 degrees and in the summer 66-94 degrees. Some of the most notable neighborhoods in Honolulu are; the downtown area, which acts as the cities center for commercial, governmental and financial; art’s district, where a number of cultural and art institutions reside; Waikiki, a world famous tourist district and Manoa (Maikiki), home for the University of Hawaii.
The oldest US Symphony Orchestra West of the Rocky Mountains is the Honolulu Symphony, established in 1900, resides on the island as well as a number of venues for live theater. There are also a number of locations to view visual arts and natural Museums. The Bishop Museum is the largest of these. Honolulu is also home to the Honolulu Zoo and Waikiki Aquarium which is also a working marine biology lab.
