Savannah is a city located in the southwestern part Georgia. It is the county seat, and largest city of Chatham County. It has an estimated population of 127,889 as of 2006, and a total area of 78.1 square miles. It is the primary port on the Savannah River, a part of the U.S. Intracoastal Waterway. The Savannah downtown area is one of the largest National Historic Landmark District since 1966.
The city was established in 1733. It was the first state and colonial capital of Georgia. Georgia then became a royal colony in 1751, until the American Revolution. The history and architecture of Savannah are internationally known due to the area's traditional southern charm and hospitality. Millions of visitors, not only from the U.S., but the world travel to the city annually. There are several coastal islands, as well as the Savannah Riverfront that are accessible to tourist, making the two places very popular.
The historic district of Savannah has 24 squares, which host formal fountains and monuments to playgrounds and lovely parks. The district also holds many historic sites, including Forsyth Park, Terminal facilities, the city market, several historic homes and cementaries, as well as Savannah State University and the Telfair Museum of Art. A number of historic houses of worship, such as churches and synagogues, are also located in the historic district.
Savannah is home to a number of performing arts venues, which includes dance, music and theater. There is shopping and other attractions (Bamboo farm, coastal gardens, Pinkie Masters Bar, Club One Jefferson) available for perusal.
