The city of Augusta is located in Georgia’s Richmond County. Augusta is situated on the fall line of the Savannah River. The residents of Augusta enjoy the subtropical climate with humid summers and mild winters. The city is apart of the Augusta-Aiken Metropolitan Area with a population of 528,519 according to the 2007 census. Within the city are an estimated 73,307 households and 48,228 families according to the 2000 census.
The economy of Augusta is boosted by the Medical College of Georgia which is a center for medicine and biotechnology. The two other largest employers include the Savannah River Site nuclear facility and U.S. Army at Fort Gordon. Augusta has many colleges and universities to choose from including Augusta State University, Savannah River College and Georgia Military College.
Augusta is internationally known for annually hosting The Masters golf tournament. The city also hosts cultural events such as Mayfest and Arts in the Heart of Augusta Festival. Museums of Augusta are centered around the arts like the Artist’s Row, Morris Museum of Art and the Sacred Heart Cultural Center. The city has several parks used for recreational purposes such as Riverwalk Augusta, Aqueduct Park, and Phinzy Swamp Nature Park.
