The city of Fort Lauderdale is located in Broward County, Florida. Because of its elaborate canal system, Fort Lauderdale has been nicknamed the “Venice of America”. According to a census conducted in 2007, Fort Lauderdale was reported to have a population of 183,606 people. The city is composed of 36 square miles.Fort Lauderdale’s economy is based heavily on tourism. In 2006, 10.35 million tourists visited the city. These tourists are mainly attracted to Fort Lauderdale’s 100 marinas and boatyards, 120 nightclubs, and over 4000 restaurants. Fort Lauderdale has been known as a hot spot for college students during spring break and is recognized as one of “America’s top gay resort areas”. Las Olas Boulevard, which is located downtown, is expanding with the development of numerous hotels, boutiques and art galleries.Fort Lauderdale has a prime healthcare and educational system. The city is home to Broward General Medical Center, a Level 1 trauma center, and Imperial Point Medical Center. Five colleges and universities in Fort Lauderdale have main or satellite campuses in the city.To get around the city, residents have access to a local bus network which is managed by the Broward County Transit (BCT). There are also four railroads that serve Fort Lauderdale.
